The Victorian era, corresponding to the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901 was a prolific and exciting time for literature. Writers from Charles Dickens and the Brontë sisters to Bram Stoker, have made this a special era in English-language literature. At the same time, this is also an era of change in the treatment and social view of people with disabilities, alongside revolutionary discoveries and inventions in medical science. In this course we will discuss the literary merit and significance of both famous and lesser known works of fiction from the period with special attention to representations of disability and disease.
