The course offers a selective survey of Anglophone critical and philosophical thought, emphasizing how Anglo-Saxon thought differs from continental thought, especially its emphasis on common sense and empiricism. The course introduces students to the works of selected leading philosophers, critics and literary theorists, and the purpose of the seminar is not simply to provide a theoretical overview but to lead students through discussion to formulate their own critical opinions and to defend them in debate. The course is structured chronologically, but it does not trace the development of Anglo-Saxon thought on a monographic basis alone; but attempts to go problem by problem and outline a few key themes to which Anglo-Saxon critics and thinkers have always returned.
